As teachers, we need to form a habit of reflecting on our practice. We want to make sure we are constantly bettering ourselves, for our students and our colleagues. Sometimes we might need to change our lesson plans or our methods of teaching if it isn’t working. Analyzing our work right after we do it will help us to recognize mistakes or areas that we need to improve in. We need to make sure we are reflecting with accuracy, specificity, and ability to use what has been learned. Teachers aren’t perfect, there is always something we can change to better ourselves.
There are two elements of component 4a that give us more information. Accuracy, as we practice reflecting, we will become more accurate and corresponding to the assessments that would be given by an external observer. We can’t reflect as if it is us, we must reflect as if it is someone else. Use in future teaching, we must use our reflections to make changes in our practice. We should make changes to our lesson plans as we go, so that next time we teach it, its improved. Teachers who demonstrate 4a give accurate reflections on a lesson and can give relevant citations of adjustments to practice. They are also able to reflect on others work and not just their own. |
As teachers, it is essential to keep an accurate record of both instruction and non instructional events. Its important to stay organized, keeping all records of what your students complete and their progress. It’s important to be able to recognize their growth and keeping track of their learning and assignments will help you do that. You also need to make sure you have viable information for when you have parents meeting and questions. You can record information electronically with spreadsheets or anecdotal notes that you keep in student folders.
There are three elements of component 4b of examples to maintain records. Student completion of assignments, the student’s success in completing them. Student progress in learning, as teachers we need to know where each student ‘is’ in their learning to teach them. Non-instruction records, for example returned permission slips and payments for picture day. Teachers who demonstrate 4b have routines and organizational skills to keep track of everything. They make sure to have accurate and updated records of their students. |
As teachers, it is very important to be involved and in contact with your student’s family. It is your responsibility to provide opportunities for the families to understand the instructional program and how their child is doing in the program. We should establish relationships with them, inviting them to be a part of their student’s education. This demonstrates the essential characteristic of a caring teacher. We want to be personable!
There are three elements of component 4c. Information about the instruction program, we need to update the families frequently. Information about individual students, let their families know how their kids are doing in your class! Engagement of families in the instructional program, we need to frequently engage families to participate in opportunities in the classroom. A teacher with a strong sense of component 4c is frequently sending information home regarding the education process. They are looking for ways to engage the family in the learning process. These teachers are looking for ways to get to know the families personally! |
As teachers, it is important to be involved with your co-workers, educational organizations, and in the community. We need to seek ways to improve our knowledge and contribute to the school. We should strive to assume leadership roles, becoming involved in varies different ways.
There are four elements that can be used to make sure we are applying this component to our lives. Relationships with colleagues, this is important because it encourages sharing, planning, and feedback. This can help us work towards student success. Involvement in a culture of professional inquiry, is when teachers are participating in a learning community. We should be supporting and respecting each other! Service to the school, we need to move beyond classroom duties and contribute to the school as well. Participation in school and district projects, we need to support larger school and district projects, showing our community we care. A great teacher that demonstrates 4d should actively participate with other colleagues and in the schools’ districts. As teachers, we aren’t only a part of the schools but the community too. |
As teachers, it is important to be continually growing and developing to remain current. Increasing your knowledge and skills will help you to become a better teacher and a better co-worker. You want to make sure that you are refining your understanding to engage students, increase learning, and better your classroom environment. As teachers gain experience and knowledge, they should find ways to filter that knowledge back into their profession and to their colleagues.
There are three elements of component 4e that help us better define our professional growth and development. Enhancement of content knowledge and pedagogical skill, teachers need to continue to grow their knowledge by taking courses, reading, and remaining current. Receptivity to feedback from colleagues, colleagues are a great resource to gain feedback and recommendations. They can also provide support and encouragement! Service to the profession, teachers should be active in organizations that are going to improve their knowledge of their subject. A teacher that can be easily distinguished is seeking out opportunities for growth and initiating conversations and activities with colleagues. We can work on growing and developing professionally through increasing our knowledge of our students and how they learn. In work samples, other educators and I, created a lesson to teach our fellow teachers about our Asian Students. |
As teachers, it is important to demonstrate professionalism with our students and our colleagues. This level of professionalism puts students first, regardless of the situation. As teachers we are called to help students in any way that we can. Whether that be seeking extra recourses, advocating for them, or seeking greater flexibility. Teacher can display professionalism through their actions; always keeping the students in mind, being trustful, supporting students, challenging students, and fulfilling required policies and procedures.
There are five elements of component 4f that give us set examples in how to show professionalism. Integrity and ethical conduct, acting with integrity and honesty. Service to students, always putting students first. Advocacy, support students’ best interests, even if it challenges certain views. Decision making, solving problems with the students in mind. Compliance with school and district regulations, teachers must follow mandates, policies, and procedures. A distinguishable teacher is recognized as someone with honesty, integrity, and confidentiality. They actively advocate for their students and take leadership role among with colleague in different organizations that aid their students. |
